Luxembourg Without a Car: A 4-Day Plan Using Only Free Transport

Day 1: Luxembourg City (walkable)

The old city core, Grund, Pfaffenthal and Clausen are all walkable or reachable via the free lifts. Follow the standard one-day plan: Corniche, Bock, Grund, Pfaffenthal lift, dinner in Clausen. The only transport you need is the free tram T1 from Hamilius to Kirchberg if you want to add MUDAM. Sleep in Ville Haute — Hotel Vauban or Hotel Simoncini are the most convenient for onward trips because they’re a 15-minute walk to the station.

Buy nothing, tap nothing — all public transport including trams, city buses, regional buses and second-class trains is free. First-class trains cost extra but you don’t need them for anything on this itinerary.

Day 2: Vianden via Ettelbruck

Train from Luxembourg central to Ettelbruck at 8:34 (or any train, they run twice hourly), arriving 9:09. Bus 570 from Ettelbruck bus station to Vianden leaves at 9:20 and arrives 9:47 directly below the castle. Full day in Vianden as described elsewhere. Last bus back to Ettelbruck around 8pm in season, then train back to the capital. Sleep another night in Ville Haute — no point moving hotels for a day trip.

Day 3: Echternach and Mullerthal

Bus 110 from Luxembourg central bus station (in front of the train station) direct to Echternach, hourly, 55 minutes. Arrive by 10am. Walk the town centre — the Basilica of Saint Willibrord and Roman villa remains are worth an hour. Then hike a short Mullerthal loop: from Echternach the Route 2 goes past Wolfsschlucht gorge and back in about 4 hours, well signposted with green M2 markers. Bring water and lunch; there's nothing on the trail.

Return bus 110 to Luxembourg City in the evening. Alternative: sleep in Echternach at Hotel Bel Air and continue directly to the Moselle next day via bus 485 to Grevenmacher. This saves an hour and lets you do a longer hike on day 3.

Day 4: Moselle wine day

Bus 175 from Hamilius direct to Remich, roughly hourly, 50 minutes. Arrive by 10am. Walk the promenade, book a tasting at Caves St Martin (10am and 2pm slots, $10), lunch at Brasserie de la Poste, afternoon at Domaines Vinsmoselle or a walk up into the vineyards. Bus 450 north to Wormeldange and Grevenmacher extends the day. Return bus 175 to Luxembourg by early evening.

Bus timetables are the one thing to check carefully — evening frequencies drop, and Sunday service is thinner. Use the mobiliteit.lu app or website for live times. Missing the last bus from Vianden is the classic mistake; from the Moselle you have more options as the buses run later on weekends.

Yes, since March 2020 all second-class public transport in Luxembourg is free for everyone including tourists. You do not need a ticket for buses, trams or second-class train travel.

How reliable are the connections?

Trains are very reliable and frequent. Buses are reliable but less frequent, especially evenings and Sundays. Always check the last return time before committing to a distant destination — the app is accurate.
