October is Luxembourg's underrated month. Weather cools to 13-16 degrees during the day, 6-8 at night, with more grey skies but manageable rainfall. The Mullerthal Trail around Echternach and Berdorf peaks in colour between 15 and 30 October — beech, oak and sycamore against the sandstone rock formations. Vianden and the Our valley turn equally spectacular; the chairlift keeps running until early November. Days shorten fast: sunset at 18:45 on 1 October, 17:20 by month end after clocks change on the last Sunday. Pack layers and waterproofs for the forest trails, which stay slippery.

What is closing down

Vianden Castle stays on summer hours until 31 October, then drops to winter (10:00-16:00) from 1 November. The chairlift closes around 5 November. Moselle boat trips end 31 October. All Saints' Day on 1 November is a public holiday that shuts almost everything. Hotel rates settle into shoulder season: Kirchberg 130-160 midweek, Gare 3-stars around 95, Echternach guesthouses 75-90. Halloween is a growing but still minor event here — mostly children trick-or-treating in villages. Late October school holidays run one week and can lift family-place bookings but do not affect city hotels much.

Where is the best October colour walk from the city?

The Wenzel Circular Walk from Ville Haute down through Grund, Clausen and Pfaffenthal shows off the ramparts framed in autumn foliage. For a full day, take the train to Echternach and walk sections B1 or B2 of the Mullerthal Trail.

Is 1 November really a total shutdown?

Nearly. All Saints' Day closes shops, banks, most restaurants and many attractions. Museums generally close. Cemeteries fill with families placing chrysanthemums. Plan travel days around it and book restaurants that stay open for tourists — hotel dining rooms are the safest bet.
