The quiet window

The first three weeks of November are as cheap as Luxembourg gets. Weather is at its worst — 6 to 10 degrees, grey skies most days, 70 mm of rain across the month, and daylight collapsing to 8.5 hours by month end. But hotels drop hard. Kirchberg business hotels sit at 85-$110 midweek, Ville Haute boutiques at 120-150, Gare 3-stars under 85. Restaurants have space, museums are empty, Bock Casemates and Vianden Castle stay open on reduced hours and you may share them with a dozen other visitors. This is when to come if you want the city without competition.

The Christmas market shift

Everything changes around 21 November when Winterlights and the Christmas markets open. Rates in Ville Haute jump 40-60 percent overnight, and the weekend of 28-29 November is essentially fully booked six weeks out. The three main markets — Place d’Armes, Place de la Constitution with its 32-metre Ferris wheel, and Place Guillaume II — draw day-trippers from Trier, Metz and Arlon. If you want the quiet-and-cheap November, book for 3-18 November. If you want markets without paying peak, aim for the first opening week (23-27 November) midweek.
