Luxembourg in May: the perfect weather window

The four holidays

May is packed with days off: Labour Day (1 May), Europe Day (9 May, a public holiday here uniquely), Ascension and Whit Monday. This produces two or three long weekends that fill hotels with Belgian, Dutch and German visitors. Rates on those Fridays and Saturdays jump to summer levels — 180-$220 at Kirchberg 4-stars — but midweek stays affordable at 130-150. The Octave pilgrimage runs for two weeks from late April into mid-May, with the closing procession through Ville Haute drawing 10,000 people on a Sunday afternoon.

What is finally open

Everything. All castles run full hours, the Vianden chairlift and Pfaffenthal panoramic lift both operate daily, Moselle river cruises run three times a day, and Mondorf's outdoor thermal pool reopens on 1 May. Weather is the best of the year — 18 to 21 degrees, low rainfall (around 60 mm spread across many light showers), long evenings with light until 21:30 by month end. Terraces in Place d’Armes, Grund and Clausen fill from 17:00. If you have one week to choose in Luxembourg, the second half of May is it.

What is the Octave and should I plan around it?

The Octave is a Marian pilgrimage running for 15 days, drawing pilgrims to the Cathédrale Notre-Dame. A market fills Place Guillaume II with food stalls — Gromperekichelcher, sausages, merguez. It is worth seeing but does not require special timing.

Does Europe Day actually shut things?

Yes. 9 May is a full public holiday in Luxembourg only. Banks, most shops and many restaurants close. Museums and tourist sites stay open, and public transport runs on Sunday timetables.
