The August lull

The first three weeks of August feel unusually quiet. Luxembourgers take their summer holidays en masse and many independent restaurants close for two to three weeks — check any specific place before travelling. Business hotels on Kirchberg drop their weekday rates 30 percent because EU institutions and banks are on break; you can find rooms at Sofitel or Meliá under $150 midweek. Assumption Day on 15 August is a public holiday that shuts banks and most shops. Weather stays warm (23-26 degrees) but with more thundery afternoons than July.

Schueberfouer

Everything changes around 22 August when the Schueberfouer opens on the Champ du Glacis in Limpertsberg. Founded in 1340 by John the Blind, this is one of Europe's oldest funfairs — 200 rides and stalls, from a 60-metre Ferris wheel to sausage stands selling Fouerfësch (fried fish). It runs about 20 days into early September. Evenings pull in the whole country. Rates in Limpertsberg and nearby Belair jump back to summer highs for the final week, and parking anywhere north of Ville Haute becomes impossible after 18:00 — use the free tram.
