Is Luxembourg Cash or Card? Money Tips for 2026

Cards: the default

Visa and Mastercard are accepted essentially everywhere — restaurants, supermarkets, museums, taxis, tram vending machines (for the paid regional cross-border tickets), hotels, pharmacies. Contactless works up to $50 without a PIN. American Express is spottier — big hotels and some restaurants take it, but many independent cafes and shops do not. Apple Pay and Google Pay are widely supported. Debit cards from other EU countries work without fees. UK and US cardholders should check for foreign transaction fees at their home bank.

Payment terminals are modern. Splitting a bill across multiple cards is normal and staff will not sigh. Tipping via card is possible but, as noted elsewhere, locals tip cash.

When you still need cash

Small bakeries and traiteurs in residential neighbourhoods sometimes have a 10 or $15 card minimum. The Wednesday and Saturday markets on Place Guillaume II have a mix — most stalls take cards now, but a couple of the flower and cheese sellers are still cash-only. Public toilets in train stations cost 50 cents to $1 in coins. Church donation boxes, buskers, and rural farm shops selling wine on the Moselle route often prefer cash.

ATMs (Bancomat) are on every second block in the city centre — BGL BNP Paribas, BIL, Spuerkeess and Post are the main networks and none charge Luxembourg cardholders. Foreign cards may hit a 2-$5 fee per withdrawal. Avoid Euronet ATMs in tourist zones; their exchange rates are noticeably worse.

Can I use pounds or dollars anywhere?

No. Euro only. Exchange offices exist at the airport and central station but rates are poor — use an ATM instead.

Are there dynamic currency conversion traps?

Yes. When paying by card, terminals sometimes ask if you want to be charged in your home currency. Always say no and pay in euros — the terminal's exchange rate is worse than your bank's.
