First-Timer Mistakes in Luxembourg (And How to Avoid Them)

Booking the wrong neighbourhood

The single most common mistake is booking a business hotel in Kirchberg because it looked cheap on the weekend, then realising you are 4 tram stops from anything interesting. Kirchberg is glass towers, EU institutions and shopping malls — it empties out after 7pm. If it is your first visit and you have two or three nights, sleep in Ville Haute or near the Gare. The Gare area gets a bad rap but is convenient, cheaper, and has better restaurants than Kirchberg by a wide margin.

The second mistake is booking Grund because it looks romantic in photos. It is beautiful but a steep climb from everywhere, and options are limited to a handful of small properties. Stay above, visit below.

Overestimating how much city there is

Luxembourg City is small. The old town core is walkable end to end in 25 minutes. Booking four nights and expecting to fill them entirely inside the city will leave you bored by day three. Plan day trips: Vianden Castle, the Moselle wine villages around Remich, Echternach and the Mullerthal, or even Trier across the German border (50 minutes by train). Treat the capital as a base, not a whole itinerary.

Related mistake: skipping the day trips because free transport made you think everything is close and easy. Vianden is 90 minutes with a bus change. Plan for it.

Sundays, cash, and closing times

Almost every shop is closed on Sunday, including supermarkets. Restaurants and museums stay open but grocery runs must happen Saturday. Some restaurants close Sunday evening and all day Monday — check before walking across town. Kitchens typically stop taking orders at 14:00 for lunch and 21:30 for dinner, earlier than in France or Spain.

Other traps: assuming Uber exists (it does not), assuming the airport has a train (it does not — bus 16 is your friend), and assuming tipping is expected American-style (it is not). Finally, do not skip a cremant du Luxembourg tasting on the Moselle. It is genuinely excellent and locals drink it more than champagne.

Two nights for the city, three or four if you want day trips to Vianden and the Moselle. More than five and you should extend into Belgium or Germany.

Taxis. Between free public transport, walkability, and the panoramic elevator, most tourists never need one. A $20 cab from the Gare to Kirchberg replaces a free 12-minute tram ride.
