Day trip to Vianden: castle, chairlift and the Our valley

Vianden Castle above the Our river

Vianden Castle above the Our river

Getting there and around

Free train from Luxembourg to Ettelbruck (35 minutes), then bus 570 to Vianden (25 minutes) — total about 90 minutes. Vianden itself is walkable: from the bus stop uphill to the castle takes 15 minutes, or a shuttle runs during high season. The castle opens 10am-6pm April-September, 10am-4pm rest of year, entry $12.

What else to do

The chairlift up the opposite side of the valley ($8 return) gives you the classic postcard view of the castle across the Our. In town, walk the ramparts and the small Victor Hugo museum ($5) — the writer lived here in 1871. Lunch at Auberge Aal Veinen for game and Luxembourg wines around $25. For a longer day, hike back down to Diekirch (12km, well-marked) and train home.

Frequently asked questions

Is Vianden worth an overnight?

If you want a peaceful evening in a medieval village with no day-trippers, yes. Hotel Belle-Vue or Hotel Théâtre both run $110-$140. Otherwise a long day trip covers it.

When is the castle least crowded?

Weekday mornings before 11am, and October-March. Summer weekends and the medieval festival (early August) draw serious crowds.
