1. Mudam (Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean), Kirchberg. I.M. Pei's last major building, with strong rotating contemporary exhibitions and a light-filled café. 2. MNAHA (National Museum of Art and History), Marché-aux-Poissons in Ville Haute. Underrated Gallo-Roman collection, medieval sculpture, and Luxembourg painters like Joseph Kutter. 3. The Steichen "Family of Man" exhibition at Clervaux Castle — a UNESCO-listed photographic survey and one of the most moving museum visits in Europe.

Mudam and MNAHA are both under $10 entry and pair well as a single museum day — Mudam is 15 minutes by tram from MNAHA. Steichen is a proper day trip (1h20 by train and bus) but worth it if photography interests you. All three have full English signage. Mudam closes on Tuesdays; MNAHA closes on Mondays; check before you go. The MNAHA's basement Gallo-Roman rooms are the surprise — expect an hour there alone.

4. Musée National de la Résistance et des Droits Humains in Esch-sur-Alzette, reopened in 2024 with a serious new permanent exhibition on WWII, occupation, and the shoah in Luxembourg. 5. Villa Vauban, a small municipal art museum in a 19th-century villa in the Ville Haute park; Dutch Golden Age and 19th-century French works. 6. Musée Dräi Eechelen at Fort Thüngen, next to Mudam, telling the fortress history of the city itself — essential context for the Casemates.

The Resistance museum in Esch is the newest of these and the most substantive on 20th-century history — allow two hours. Villa Vauban is compact (an hour is plenty) and a good rainy-morning option in the centre. Dräi Eechelen makes the Casemates make sense; ideally do it before descending into the tunnels. I’d cheerfully skip the Casino Luxembourg contemporary art space unless there's a specific show you want to see.
