Morning: two museums in Ville Haute

Start at the National Museum of History and Art on Marché-aux-Poissons at 10:00. Free entry, and the archaeology floors covering Roman Luxembourg are genuinely good — give it 90 minutes. Walk two minutes covered to the Musée d’Histoire de la Ville de Luxembourg on Rue du Saint-Esprit; the glass lift through the rock alone is worth the 5 euro ticket, and the fortress models make sense of what's under your feet. Lunch at the museum café or duck across to Chocolate House opposite the Palace for a hot chocolate on a spoon (8 euros, ridiculous, correct choice in the rain).

Afternoon: Kirchberg culture cluster

Take tram 1 from Hamilius to Philharmonie — the tram is covered end to end. Mudam (contemporary art, 8 euros) and the Musée Dräi Eechelen (fortress history, free) sit next door to each other, and the Philharmonie sometimes has open rehearsals if you check the schedule. This is three indoor stops on one plateau. Head back to the city centre by tram for dinner. If the rain is really persistent, skip the Grund entirely — the descent stairs are slippery and there's nothing indoor down there that beats what you’ve already done.
