What justifies the stop
The Old Town and fortifications are a UNESCO World Heritage site for good reason: the view from the Chemin de la Corniche over the Grund is one of the great urban panoramas in Europe, and the Bock casemates carve 17 kilometres of tunnels through the cliff. Vianden Castle, an hour north by free train and bus, is genuinely spectacular. The Mullerthal offers real hiking through sandstone gorges, and the Moselle produces excellent cremant and riesling that most travellers have never tried. Everything is safe, clean, punctual, and transport is free.
For a two-night stopover between Brussels, Paris and the Rhine, it punches well above the guidebook page count.
Why it might disappoint
The capital has around 130,000 residents and empties on Sundays; nightlife is thin, and the restaurant scene, while competent and expensive, is not a destination in itself. There is no beach, no mountains you can ski, and museums are solid rather than world-class. Prices are Swiss-adjacent: a beer is 5-6 euros, a main course 22-30, a mid-range hotel 180 euros a night. If you are choosing between Luxembourg and, say, Ghent or Strasbourg for the same trip, those cities offer more density of things to do.
